In Kansas, the <a href=\"https:\/\/kmmrc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/KS-Maternal-Morbidity-Mortality-Report_Dec-2020_FINAL2-21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">maternal mortality rate is 14.8<\/a>\u2014meaning 14.8 women die for every 100,000 live births. Black women are more likely to die than white or Hispanic women.<br><br>Dr. Sharla Smith of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kumc.edu\/school-of-medicine\/academics\/departments\/population-health\/research\/kansas-birth-equity-network.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kansas Birth Equity Network<\/a> joined Health Fund CEO David Jordan for a conversation on the Black maternal health crisis.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\r\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Conversation with Dr. Sharla Smith on Black maternal health\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lOUpzHRPLN8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n<\/div><figcaption>Conversation with Dr. Sharla Smith of the Kansas Birth Equity Network<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&#8220;Black women are two to three times more likely to die of childbirth-related issues than white women,&#8221; said Dr. Smith. &#8220;We&#8217;re seeing that crisis happen in the absence of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/socialdeterminants\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social determinants of health<\/a>. So, Black women from the wealthiest communities still have worse outcomes.
