He would arrive at school early and use the time to read the newspaper in the library. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I was one of those weird kids who was really interested in current events and paid attention to the news,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He begged his mom for a subscription to Newsweek. When he went off to college at Emporia State University, he got a job as a sports reporter for the college newspaper.
