In this podcast, we share inspiring stories of pioneering leaders from our nation and from your backyard who are working to improve health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 22%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In episode 55, we interview <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kumc.edu\/ssmith37.html\">Sharla Smith, Ph.D., MPH<\/a>, who serves as an associate professor at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. She is a health services and systems researcher whose primary research is maternal and infant health disparities, women cancer disparities, and community engagement. She is also the co-founder of Kansas Sisters and Brothers for Healthy Infants and the founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kumc.edu\/school-of-medicine\/academics\/departments\/population-health\/research\/kansas-birth-equity-network.html\">Kansas Birth Equity Network<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><a href=\"https:\/\/kansasreflector.com\/author\/sherman-smith\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/healthfund.org\/a\/wp-content\/uploads\/1783097194098.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9876 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/healthfund.org\/a\/wp-content\/uploads\/1783097194098.png 800w, https:\/\/healthfund.org\/a\/wp-content\/uploads\/1783097194098-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/healthfund.org\/a\/wp-content\/uploads\/1783097194098-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/healthfund.org\/a\/wp-content\/uploads\/1783097194098-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this episode, she shares how she originally intended to become an OB\/GYN physician. However, after going to college, she decided on a different career path \u2014 one where she felt she could touch even more lives. She decided to pursue systems research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I was still able to come back to that passion of maternal and child health, but in a way that I was able to work directly with the community, as well as work with the physicians to really make a change on different levels,&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She wanted to focus on community, healthcare and policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;That was my overall goal \u2014 was how do I change the world for every person, every mom, and every dad and every baby,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She ultimately pursued a doctorate degree in health systems and services research with a concentration in health economics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this episode, she discusses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Disparities that exist for Black mothers and children of color<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advancing equity and addressing disparities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building systems that support families<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The importance of building a culturally competent workforce to improve health outcomes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coordination of care<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reforms needed to provide better care<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why community engagement is important<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Founding the Kansas Birth Equity Network and its mission<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The importance of including fathers in the conversation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Women&#8217;s cancer disparities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What gives her hope<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And much more!
